Another small project. Stash buster to use up some of my leftover blanket yarn. Still have a bit of the pink and green, but didn鈥檛 want the bed to get too big for the windowsill :)
No pattern, just made a rectangle with lemon peel stitch (alternate SC and DC, then DC into SC and SC into DC), then folded in half and HDC around :)) chips already likes it, Jum is skeptical.

I had to buy the big blanket yarn to make a chicken for a friend (as you do), so I got enough to make a blanket off a pattern I have.
It's this geometric rug. But, come on. It's crochet. Any rug can be a blanket if you use a cozy yarn.
The chicken is here. I'm making this particular version that has eggs inside for the youngest youngling. It's not something I'd generally make for myself, so I'm glad to have a reason to try it.

When I swatch this yarn* as a rectangle, I get 9 stitches in 4.5" (or 2 stitches/inch).
Tumblr media
When I try to make an earflap with the same yarn, same needles, same tensioning technique, 4.5" is 11 stitches (i.e. ~2.4 stitches/inch).
Tumblr media
What am I not understanding?
Say I just keep going until the earflaps are the size I need them to be, and then use my rectangular gauge to calculate how many stitches to cast on for the front and the back, will I end up with a hat that's way too big because once I join in the round my gauge will go back up?
I.e., total circumference of the hat is 20". Each earflap is 5.5". The front is also 5.5", and the back is 3.5". If I keep going, say it takes me 13 stitches to reach 5.5" for each earflap. That's a total of 26 stitches for both earflaps. Then for the front I cast on 5.5" x 2 sts/inch = 11 stitches, and for the back I cast on 3.5" x 2 sts/inch = 7 stitches. That's a total of 44 stitches. I join in the round, and because I'm not doing any increases, I get 2 stitches/inch. That will give me a hat that's 22 inches around, i.e. too big. I am confused.
I think I'm just gonna have to do it and see what happens. It's a good thing I have a second skein, because I see a lot of frogging in this skein's future. First I need to get a metal circular needle though: it turns out polyester is super grabby and doesn't play well with my wood needles.
*Red Heart Boutique Chic, essentially identical to Bernat Blanket.

My first attempt at crocheting a Ditto while I was at Natsuikashii Con. Came out pretty well I think. It was good enough for someone to purchase for a baby at least!
